Warning Signs to Repair or Replace the Sewer Line

How to Tell if the Sewer Line Needs Service

Recognizing the symptoms of a faltering sewer line is critical for maintaining the health and safety of a home environment. Several signs can be indicators that the sewer line requires prompt repair or replacement. Addressing these issues right away can prevent more serious and costly damage to the property and ensure that the household plumbing and drainage continue to function well.

Frequent Clogs or Slow Drains

If a household experiences clogs often, it may indicate an underlying problem, such as tree roots that have grown into the sewer lines or a broken or crushed sewer line.

Slow draining is another sign that these issues could be occurring, or it could be due to a clogged sewer line. A plumber can inspect the line to determine whether it’s a clog that requires drain cleaning or if there is an underlying issue that requires sewer line replacement or repair.

Bad Smells

A foul smell, like the smell of sewage, can also occur if the sewer line is damaged and leaking. Often, this is noticed outside the home in the yard due to sewage leaking from the underground sewer line into the yard, but smells may also reach indoors.

Homeowners must call a plumber right away if they notice these foul smells since exposure to sewage can lead to illness. Depending on the severity of the sewer line problem, repair or replacement may be needed. A plumber can inspect the line noninvasively with a sewer video camera to see the extent of the damage before suggesting the best solution.

Fast-Growing Sections of Grass

Unfortunately, if one patch of grass appears greener and faster growing than the rest, it may also be a sign of sewage leaking from a damaged sewer line. Since the sewage line is abundant with waste, any type of crack or damage can allow it to seep into the yard and act as a fertilizer for the grass or greenery around it. This can cause a particular patch of lawn to become greener or longer than the rest.

Although sewer line trouble is never good news, the lush patches of grass can also help plumbers know where the leak is located. The sewer system is not impervious to damage. Cracks and damage can occur due to issues such as old age, corrosion, and tree roots that can grow into the underground piping in search of nutrients.
