How the Rainy Season Can Ruin Your Septic System

How Heavy Rain Can Overflow Septic Tanks

As the rainy season continues, homeowners need to be aware of the risks associated with septic systems. It is common to have a septic backup during or after heavy rain. But there are preventative measures that can help. This article explains the signs of septic backup and how to prevent further issues.

Ground Flooding

Significant rainfall can flood the ground quickly. The soil area around the septic tank absorbs water that flows out of the septic system. But if excessive rainfall has already pooled around the septic tanks, there is nowhere for the water to go.

With no way out, the water backs up into the drains of the home. If ground flooding has occurred, the toilets may not flush, and water will drain very slowly. Ground flooding can also result in untreated sewage flowing into groundwater, which can be toxic.

Clogged Drainfields

A drain field is an area around a septic tank where the water can flush out into. Even if it has not rained enough for standing water, saturated soil around the septic tank means water cannot flow out of the system. This means the septic water backs up to the home and can create an odor. If left untreated, the water can overflow from the floor, shower drains, and toilets. If some of these signs are present, a professional can come to inspect the tank and the system to help determine what repairs are needed.

How To Prevent Overflow During Rainy Seasonseptic

There are several things homeowners can do to prevent soil saturation or flooding around their septic systems. Usually, these problems are only serious if one does not maintain the system.
  1. Pump the septic tank: Periodically, septic tanks need to be pumped to keep them from overflowing. This will depend on how big the tank is, so it is important to be familiar with the system. Ensuring the tank gets pumped before the rainy season can prevent flooding, even when there is rain. But if the home has a small tank, it can fill up again in a few days.
  2. Install risers and lids: Many tanks are buried underground and therefore not easily accessible. Most professionals recommend digging it up and having risers with lids installed. This means repairs can be completed more easily and save the homeowner money. Without risers, there is an extra cost for digging up the tank when there is an issue.
  3. Direct runoff: Having a drainage route away from the drainage field can keep the surrounding soil from becoming saturated. Ensure the home's gutters point away from the drainage field and keep them free of debris.
  4. Check baffle tees: Baffle tees are installations inside the tank on the sides of the pipes. These help stop the flow of water and allow incoming water to flow into the tank. Making sure these are installed correctly and free of debris can help the tank run smoothly during the rainy season.
