When a water heater starts to go bad, it can be frustrating. Sometimes these issues happen randomly, but most of the time, they occur because the unit has become too old. A water heater that is ten years old or more will often start having issues, resulting in the need for a replacement.

For the most part, getting rid of sediment buildup is easy and requires flushing the tank and checking or replacing the anode rod. Even if there is no sediment present, it’s important to flush the system twice a year to help prevent it from occurring in the first place. If maintenance is neglected, the sediment will cause the tank to corrode and need a replacement. 

Water is Discolored and Smelly

If the water produced from the faucets connecting to a hot water tank happens to be discolored, looks rusty or musty, is unclear, or smells bad, then signs point to a hot water tank that is on its last leg. Unfortunately, these issues can occur when the unit or the pipes are corroded, leading to less-than-appealing colors and smells. 

Corrosive materials are drawn in by an anode rod to protect the water heater. However, if the anode rod is too old or worn down, the corrosion cannot be avoided as it would with a working anode rod. If the anode rod is faulty, then the tank should be drained and the rod replaced. However, in severe cases, the tank may have suffered wear and tear that is too great to be repaired, and an entire water heater replacement may be necessary.
